Stories Before Stakes
Find your student's voice before the pressure turns up.
10th grade is the perfect time to explore personal narrative — before college apps loom, before every sentence feels like it's being judged. This track gives students space to discover their stories, experiment with voice, and bank raw material they'll draw on for years.
What this track is for
The biggest mistake families make is waiting until 11th or 12th grade to start thinking about personal narrative. By then, the pressure is so high that students freeze. Track 2 solves that. In 10th grade, there are no stakes — which means students can actually explore. They dig into their experiences, find the moments that matter, and practice writing about themselves without the weight of a deadline.
Low-pressure exploration
No college apps, no deadlines — just writing
6–8 weeks
Flexible pacing based on the student
Story bank
Raw material ready for 11th and 12th grade
Week by week
Memory mining
Timelines, "small moment" inventories, and values mapping. Students learn to find meaning in the specific and ordinary — not just the dramatic or obvious.
Scene vs. summary
Writing moments readers can see and hear. Students practice the craft move that separates memorable personal essays from forgettable ones.
Reflection without cliché
Earning the insight instead of announcing it. Students learn to let the story do the work — and resist the urge to over-explain what it all means.
Two polished vignettes + story bank
(8-week version) Students complete two polished vignettes and compile a story bank document of 10+ usable moments — raw material they'll mine in 11th grade.
What your student walks away with
A personal story bank
A documented collection of 10+ story seeds, annotated with themes and possible essay angles.
2 polished personal vignettes
Short, finished personal essays that showcase the student's voice and specific experiences. Explicitly not a college essay yet.
A head start on college essays
When 11th and 12th grade arrive, your student won't be starting from scratch.
How it works
6–8 weekly sessions, 60 minutes each
Live on Zoom — no recordings, no modules
Written feedback between sessions on drafts
Sessions scheduled around your family's calendar
10th grade is the right time.
